Day 23 The Netherlands – Rotterdam

Ventured on the train again, this time to Rotterdam. I felt like we were back in Melbourne. The similarities are unbelievable. Had a tiring day walking around to all the sights – think we covered about 7kms. Even found some time to do a little shopping – got Liv a really nice top. Went up the Euromast. We went to the second lookout spot – and that was high enough. We could have caught this rotating glass thing to the very top – only insane people would do that. I felt sick at the level we were at. Were very curious at what was known as Blaakse Bos (Cube Houses). They were designed by Pier Blom and they were designed to create a ‘bridge’ of houses over a major road. They are a three story cube and built on top of each other and very unusual inside. Furniture has to be especially crafted for them. Later in the afternoon we went to Delfshaven. This is a historic part of town and pays significant homage to the pilgrims. Saw inside the Pilgrim Fathers Church. This is the church where the Pilgrim’s had their last service. Located on the point on Delfshaven is the large windmill - Wheat mill De Distilleerketel. This is a restored old mill and all sorts of flour are still sold here. Lovely little area in itself (2 minutes away a little rough). Things to note:
1. People keep asking Rick for directions...looks like a local
2. People look at Rick...looks like a typical Dutchie (he is quite tall here –
yes I know I was surprised to, I thought everyone would be a giant).
3. Big cities so quiet – relative to Melbourne CBD
4. Cars give way to pedestrians (novel experience in France and Belgium)
5. The Dutch cannot build straight...buildings lean significantly
